About Our Speakers

Louie Psihoyos is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker and Executive Director of the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS). He is recognized as one of the top still photographers in the world, having created iconic images for National Geographic for 18 years, and hundreds of covers for other magazines. Believing that film can be the most powerful weapon in the world, Louie founded OPS with Silicon Valley entrepreneur Jim Clark in 2005. An ardent diver and dive photographer, Psihoyos’ mission is to show the world the decline of the oceans–our planet’s most crucial resource. Circling the globe dozens of times on photographic missions, he collects the imagery and stories underlying the compelling issues that challenge and threaten the natural world while connecting with environmentalists who are working to save the planet.

Shanna H. Swan, Ph.D., is one of the world’s leading environmental and reproductive epidemiologists. She is Professor of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City where she is also a member of the Center on Health and Environment Across the Lifespan and the Mindich Child Health and Development Institute. Shanna is also Adjunct Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of California San Francisco and Director of the Action Science Initiative. For more than twenty years, Dr. Swan and her colleagues have been studying the dramatic decline in sperm count globally. She has published more than 200 scientific papers and a myriad of book chapters and has been featured in extensive media coverage around the world. In 2022, Dr. Swan and co-author Stacey Colino published the book, Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Health, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race (Simon & Schuster, February 2022). Dr. Swan is committed to broadening the impact of this science for the protection of public health and the environment.

Eric and Julie Isaac tried to conceive for nearly five years. They dove into the intervention documented in The Plastic Detox with rigor and good humor—ditching fragranced cleaning items and personal care products, prioritizing plastic free food storage, and even swapping out their beloved sparkling water drinks. Their chemical loads fell within two months, and they began to notice striking changes: weight loss, more energy, less brain fog, better sleep, and dramatically higher fertility scores. A few months after the intervention, Julie became pregnant. Having learned how endocrine disruptors affect a developing child, she adapted the intervention changes down to the items she placed on her baby registry. With the tools to understand how endocrine disruptors affect babies in utero and in early life, she had control of her growing family's purchases and health. In February, Eric and Julie welcomed a healthy baby boy! They remain committed to reducing exposure in their home, sharing what they have learned with others, and working towards meaningful policy change to protect people trying to conceive. Their story shows that small, practical changes can create real transformation and that families can reclaim their health one choice at a time.
